Safety Switch Installation Brisbane: Cost, Laws & Why You Need One
Safety switches save lives. Here's what Brisbane homeowners need to know about RCD requirements, installation costs, and how to test if yours is working.
30 milliseconds. That's how fast a safety switch trips when it detects a problem. For context: it takes humans roughly 400 milliseconds to blink. Which means a safety switch reacts about 13 times faster than your most basic involuntary reflex — and considerably faster than your ability to let go of whatever you've accidentally grabbed. That speed is the entire point.
Here's what Brisbane homeowners need to know about safety switches — because a shocking number of homes don't have them. (Yes, that was an electrical pun. We're not sorry.)

What Is a Safety Switch?
A safety switch monitors the current flowing in and out of a circuit. If it detects a difference of 30 milliamps or more — the amount that can cause cardiac arrest — it trips in 30 milliseconds.
Without a safety switch, if you touch a live wire or a faulty appliance, the current will flow through your body to earth. The circuit breaker won't trip because the current level (through a human) is often too low to trigger it. A safety switch will.
Circuit breakers protect your wiring from overloads and short circuits. Safety switches protect you from electrocution.
They are different devices. Many older Brisbane homes have circuit breakers but no safety switches — and that's the problem. You might as well have a smoke alarm with no battery.
Queensland Safety Switch Laws
Queensland has progressive requirements for safety switches (RCDs):
New homes built since 1992 must have RCDs on all power circuits. Homes built since 2000 must have them on lighting circuits too.
Rental properties — landlords have been required to install RCDs on power circuits since 2002 and lighting circuits since 2007 for new tenancies. All existing tenancies required full compliance by 2018.
Properties being sold — since 2002, sellers must declare whether safety switches are installed. If they're not, this must be disclosed to the buyer.
All homes by 2027 — as part of the smoke alarm upgrade rollout, Queensland is pushing toward full RCD compliance across all residential properties.
How Many Safety Switches Do You Need?
| Home Type | Minimum Required | |---|---| | Post-2000 home | RCD on every power AND lighting circuit | | Pre-2000 home (rental) | RCD on every power AND lighting circuit | | Pre-2000 home (owner-occupied) | RCD on power circuits at minimum |
In practice, we recommend RCDs on all circuits — the cost difference is minimal and the safety benefit is complete.
A modern switchboard for a 3-bedroom Brisbane home typically has 8–14 circuits. Each needs an RCD.
Safety Switch Installation Cost Brisbane
| Job | Typical Cost | |---|---| | Add RCDs to existing switchboard (per RCD) | $120–$220 each | | Replace existing switchboard + install RCDs | $1,400–$2,800 | | Test and inspect existing RCDs (no replacement) | $100–$150 |
Guide prices only — your exact cost is confirmed before any work starts.
The most economical time to add safety switches is when you're already having your switchboard upgraded — the electrician is already there and the board is already open. Timing, as with most things, matters.
Types of Safety Switches
RCD/MCB Combination (RCBO) Provides both overload protection AND residual current protection in a single device. If one circuit trips, only that circuit loses power — the rest of the house is unaffected. This is the premium option and what we install in most jobs.
RCD + MCB Separate A single RCD can protect multiple circuits. If it trips, all those circuits lose power — which can be disruptive. Cheaper to install but less convenient. Losing the kitchen, living room, and hallway all at once because your old kettle has a bad element gets old quickly.
Portable RCD plug adapters Can be used with power tools and appliances when working in areas without fixed RCD protection (e.g. a shed on a property without a safety switch). Not a permanent substitute for a fixed RCD — think of it as a seatbelt for your drill, not a replacement for the car's airbags.
How to Test Your Safety Switch
Your safety switches should be tested every six months. Most of Brisbane has never done this. Here's how — it takes 30 seconds:
- Press the TEST button on the safety switch (usually a small button labelled T on the device in your switchboard)
- The switch should immediately trip to the OFF position
- Check that the protected circuits have lost power (lights or appliances should have gone off)
- Reset by switching back to ON
If the switch doesn't trip when you press TEST — the RCD is faulty and needs replacing immediately. Call a licensed electrician.
If you can't find a TEST button — you may have circuit breakers but no safety switches. Call us for an assessment.
Common Signs Your Safety Switch Is Faulty
- Trips frequently without an obvious cause
- Won't reset after tripping
- Doesn't trip when TEST button is pressed
- Makes clicking or buzzing sounds
- Shows signs of heat damage or discolouration
Can a Safety Switch Trip Due to an Appliance?
Yes — and this is the most common reason for an unexpected trip. A safety switch trips when it detects current leaking to earth, which can happen because:
- An appliance has a faulty element (especially old electric kettles, dishwashers, or hot water systems)
- Water has entered a circuit or appliance (particularly relevant in Brisbane's humid climate and storm season)
- An extension cord or appliance is worn or damaged
If your safety switch keeps tripping, the fix is to find and remove the faulty appliance — not to replace the safety switch. The safety switch is doing exactly its job. We can help identify the culprit.
